Contributor's comments: Growing up in Adelaide I had relatives in Gawler. We would always pick up some german cake in Williamstown on the way home. Strictly speaking the topping must be flavoured with Kuchen essence, which is only available from chemists in Tanunda or Nurioopta or other Barossa Valley towns.

Contributor's comments: This is also called streusel cake. It is a yeast cake topped with 'streusel' (flour, butter, sugar & cinnamon - crumbled). Ironically, in the Barossa where we have the most distinctive regional food in Australia, we call it German Cake. Almost the rest of the state calls it Streusel Cake.
