otto
A large rubbish bin with wheels. Wheeled out to the kerbside weekly for the council to empty: Chuck it in the otto. Compare sulo bin, wheely bin. Also, otto bin.
Contributor's comments: The term wheely bin has been used in Brisbane ever since they were introduced by the council. Once my daughter told her cousin, who was visiting from NSW, to put some rubbish in the wheely bin. He put it in the wheelbarrow as he didn't know what she was talking about. He called it an Otto.
Contributor's comments: [Brisbane informant] The council supplied bin used to put out the garbage: "Have you put out the otto bin?"
Contributor's comments: My brother (mid-north coast) used to say that people who were unpopular with the neighbours or workmates 'only had Otto for a mate' (meaning they were on the 'outside' like the wheely bin).
Contributor's comments: One day, after moving from Sydney to Brisbane, my mum asked me to put some rubbish in the otto. A friend who was over at the time asked 'did you give your bin a name?'. In Brisbane they're called wheelie bins.
