gum suckers

Everyone from Victoria: If you stood up in a Melbourne bar and shouted 'I hate Collingwood' you'd get thrown out by a hundred gum suckers.

Contributor's comments: How did this name originate please?

Editor's comments: The term dates back to the early 19thC when it was a common habit for people to chew on balls of gum taken from acacia trees. That only Victorians did this seems well-nigh impossible, but somehow the sobriquet was attached to them. Perhaps gum-producing acacia trees were more common there?
