pelican pick

A digging implement with one pointed end and one round end used for bogging difficult areas that are too hard for machinery or banjos to reach: Clean up those corners with a pelican pick.

Contributor's comments: This is more of a mining, than a regional, term. I've heard it used in Broken Hill and in Tasmania, as well as the Western Australian gold mining industry.
