snowbird

people towing caravans coming to Darwin/Top End at the start of the Dry season and who leave before the build up: Here comes another snowbird (car and caravan with southern number plates)

Contributor's comments: I came across this term first in Montreal - i.e. people who leave Canada during winter for warmer climes (Hawaii, FLorida, etc.). I've since heard it used of people from the south (Victoria, NZ in particular) who come north to the Qld coast in winter.
