Contributor's comments: While pads generally consist of either blocks of blank paper or possibly a blank book, an exercise book is more likely to have written instructions within, with space for answers.
Contributor's comments: In NSW an "exercise book" is a book of blank ruled paper with cardboard covers for writing lessons in. It is NOT a pad.
Contributor's comments: In late 50's "pad" exercise books were used as "pads" but I don't remember anyone being chastised for taking class notes on padnotes - for later transcription.
