dog watch

The night shift from 12pm to 7am. Came from the Newcastle BHP Steel Works: He working dog watch this week.

Contributor's comments: I've never had any connection with the Newcastle steelworks, but I can recall in Sydney in the 1960s using "dogwatch" to describe the midnight to dawn shift in one of Australia's first computer centres.

Contributor's comments: Growing up in Newcastle around the mining and other industrial areas I frequently heard this expression as meaning the night shift in all the industries. It was often shortened to "doggie".
