makeup drink

cordial. I first heard this expression after moving to the north coast of NSW and realising that what I used to call "cordial" - meaning the syrup one added to tap water to make a flavoured drink - was used to mean "soft drink" or flavoured carbonated water. Makeup dring is just that - drink you make up: I am going to buy a bottle of makeup drink.

Contributor's comments: The expression makeup drink was used by my family and friends around the Maitland area for as long as I can remember. We still use it now when we are referring to concentrated cordial syrup "made up" with water.
