wop

To wag school; take a day off school: Are you wopping a day off school?; Did you wop it?

Contributor's comments: Same as 'wag' - meaning to abscond from school for the day - used in the Newcastle/Maitland area at least: "Jamie Smith is going wop school tomorrow. Shall we nick off too?" "Jamie wopped school yesterday." "Jamie is wopping school today."

Contributor's comments: Used in the Newcastle area until mid 1980s.

Contributor's comments: I went to school in Newcastle 1948-1954. I agree that "wop" or "wop it" was the local expression for wagging school.

Contributor's comments: This word is still used, its usage did not stop in the mid-1980's.

Contributor's comments: Sometimes the word 'wag' was used, sometimes the word 'wop' was used, as in "he wopped school today" or "he was wopping it". 'Wop' and 'wag' were interchangable.
