Editor's comments: The variant "Chinee" dates back to the 19th century and is based on the false assumption that "Chinese" is a plural. That is, if you have "two Chinese", then you have "one Chinee". It is interesting to see that this form has survived to the 21st century in the compound "Chinee apple"!
Contributor's comments: We had two Chinese apple trees in our front yard in Fremantle (W.A.). Loved climbing the tree in summer time and having a snack of them. Never knew the real name for the trees until many years later.
