burnie burnie
Word for a dark brown/black seed from a native (?) tree. Round & flat - about 3-4 cm diameter & about 1cm wide. Kids would rub the seat on cement, bitumen, etc, to heat the edge. Then put in onto someone's arm or leg, to burn them. Hence, burnie burnie: John got me with a burnie burnie. Also, burny burny, burnie bean.
Contributor's comments: When I lived in NQ, we called the beans 'burnie beans'. When you used them, you gave someone a 'burnie burnie'. I have lived in FNQ, NQ, CQ, SEQ and now VIC. I have often mentioned this term over the years, and the only people who know what I'm talking about are those who have lived in FNQ or NQ.
