Contributor's comments: Having lived all my life in Northern Tasmania and on King Island, I find that 'cheers' is not an infrequent farewell.
Contributor's comments: [North Coast Qld informant] This seems fairly recent and may be short-lived, but "cheers" is commonly used as a substitute for "thanks", as in "Cheers for the fishing trip, Dad".
Contributor's comments: I've heard this term used in Melbourne to mean thanks, but it's mainly used by British people. I think that's where the expression used in this way comes from.

Contributor's comments: Coming from central Queensland I have only ever heard this word used as a toast after drinks were served. Now I am in England they use it to say "thanks" all the time and I find this most irritating.
