Fremantle
Name of the port west of Perth city. My comment is on the pronunciation of this word. I am a Victorian, but my wife grew up near Fremantle. Her family and I believe most West Australians pronounce the word as "free mantle". I notice that the Victorian ABC newsreaders tend to say "fra mantle" with the emphasis on the last part of the word. During the football season you can hear the word each week in reference to the "Free mantle" Dockers.
Contributor's comments: Grew up in Fremantle and it's most definitely pronounced Free-mantle. I've even seen it spelt Freemantle in some eastern states magazines. *cringe*
