crosswalk

noun a pedestrian crossing.

Contributor's comments: This is a common word in the midwest, USA.

Contributor's comments: As a child, 30 years ago in NSW, I said "zebra crossing".

Contributor's comments: [Perth informant] Crosswalk is definitely an Americanism. 'Zebra crossing' (where there are stripes across the road) or Pedestrian crossing are more commonly used in W.A., at least in the 1980s and 90s.

Contributor's comments: I've lived in WA all my life, and it's always been called a crosswalk here.

Contributor's comments: Was definitely common in WA until recently. Perhaps "pedestrian crossing" is replacing it. "Zebra crossing" sounds very British to my ears.
