dodger
A slang term meaning bread, but I don't know its origin. Still used by someone who was a rural worker around Ganmain and Coolamon districts in the 1940s: His son still asks me to collect some dodger on my way home from work, so that he can make sangers (sandwiches). The same person talks about adding sand (sugar) to a cup of tea and taking a call on the dog-and-bone (telephone).
Contributor's comments: Heard more widely than area mentioned as, "Chuck us a hunk of dodger, will yer?"
Contributor's comments: Dodger has always meant someone who shirks away from their responsibilities or sneakily gets away with not doing their job. Their behaviour is often classed as "dodgy" meaning suspicious, slack, or lazy.
