Editor's comments: In Sydney the terms "scallop" and "potato scallop" are interchangeable. What's the story in your region?
Contributor's comments: I can't ever remember hearing the word 'potato cake'. We always called them Potato Scallops in Perth and the country.
Contributor's comments: Every fish and chip shop I have been in in WA calls them potato scallops. If I ask for a potato cake they look at me funny!
Contributor's comments: It was always a potato cake in Victoria but I now have to order a potato scallop in WA........and the dim sims don't taste as nice over here!
Contributor's comments: In my younger days these were inveriably referred to in Adelaide as 'potato fritters' (which I think is much more descriptive). Occasionally now you see the term 'potato cake'. 'Scallops' are definitely seafood here.
Contributor's comments: "Scotch Scallops" used in Northern England - and brought to Australia - Potato Cakes are a different dish - boiled potatoes mashed, shaped and griddle fried (sometimes with finely chopped onions added).
Contributor's comments: In Brisbane they are always potato scallops, however in the tourist strips one can order potato cakes without strange looks. Not to be confused with scalloped potatoes, a creamy baked dish with onion in it.
Contributor's comments: In Sydney a scallop was a potato scallop, in Brisbane it's also a scallop, but if you don't prefix it with potato you might get the seafood version.
Contributor's comments: Definitely used in Canberra in the 1960s and 1970s, perhaps beyond.
Contributor's comments: I grew up in Melbourne where these were always called potato cakes. These are a slice of potato deep fried in batter. Mashed potato must be some fancy variation. You can also get them on the Far South Coast of NSW without too many strange looks. In one of the Womens Weekly cookbooks there was a recipe for this correct sort of potato cake. It worked well!
Contributor's comments: I'm from Melbourne, and my partner had moved there from Brisbane. He went to the Fish&Chip shop, and my order end with ". . . and 3 scallops" He came back triumphantly with 3 potato cakes. After we had sorted out the confusion, I asked him what I should have said to get seafood rather than potatoes. He said, after a moments thought, "They're called 'scallops' too?" [Note: When my mum made potato cakes, they were the mashed potato burger style ones. But from a shop, it was definitely the battered deep fried slice that was a potato cake]
