I grew up on a property on the Darling Downs in Qld. The elastic-sided riding boots we used to wear (made by RM Williams) were called 'laughing sides' - why, I could never find out. Maybe because they would stretch, or 'smile', when you wore them: You'll need a pair of laughing sides if you're going out riding.
