North Island

Mainland Australia: We're going to the north island for a holiday.

Contributor's comments: A Tasmanian shopkeeper's reply to me when I said I was from Melbourne: 'Oh, you're from the North Island'. This was in the eighties and I've never heard it used on any later visits to Tasmania.

Contributor's comments: Used in Tasmania to refer to mainland Australia. Usually used "tongue-in-cheek" to mainlanders to see if one can get a "rise" out of them, as its use clearly drawns parrallels to the New Zealand situation where the North and South Islands are roughly equal: "You returning to the North Island soon?"
